Hartmann Luggage Wardrobe Trunk from the 1930's

Featured this week is a great find from Elizabeth Bieser.  This is a 1930's Hartmann  Luggage Wardrobe Trunk from Racine Wisconsin.  The Hartmann Luggage Company is over 130 years old and is still in business today crafting the finest luggage and leather goods.  This trunk has a cushion top and inside has original hangers, locking drawers, and a built in box for valuables and jewelry.  This trunk's original label is in tact and has it's original key.  Nicole Kidman used a trunk like this in the 2008 movie, "Austrailia".    These trunks are now being used for coffee tables.  You will find many interesting items from Elizabeth at That Shop In Milford.

The Joys of Being An Antique Collector and Vendor

Courtesy of "The Vintage Home" and Becky Elliott

Photos offer a unique peek into the past and I have always enjoyed featuring them in my shop because of the comments they evoke from people who are casually browsing. I secure them from a variety of sources including auctions, estate sales and other antique shops. It is an added bonus when a photo has had the name of the individual recorded on the back.

Recently, it was my pleasure to return a "long-lost" wedding portrait to its rightful owner. It took only three phone calls to connect this lovely early 1900's photo with the correct family and the moment was made even more special when it was learned that this portrait was not among their collection.
I also enjoy featuring single photo holders fashioned from antique salt and pepper shakers in my area of That Shop In Milford. The photos generate a lot of interest and many comments.  Not long ago several women were admiring the photos when a loud gasp was heard from one of them. It turns out that the photo was of two sets of aunts and uncles taken in Hyde Park in the 1930's! It was a pleasure to return the photo to a family member. Helping a total stranger make a meaningful connection to the past reinforces why it's such fun to be an antique vendor!
